Schedule: Shifts are from 5:45 - 6:15, either days or nights. LPN´s may be scheduled to work either one of the following 2 week schedules, depending on need:
10 eight hour days, M-F
7 twelve hour days
Requirements: 21 years of age, Current VA Nursing license, able to work 12 hour shifts.
Duties:

Evaluates and provides comprehensive health care in a detention setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of security.

Initiates and maintains compliance with Virginia Department of Correction (VDOC) minimum standards, the American Correctional Association (ACA) standards and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) standards for accreditation.

Devises and implements plan for providing health care to inmates.

Performs a receiving health screening, mental health screening, dental evaluation and physical fitness screening on inmates entering the detention setting.

Performs health screens on inmates at sick call, treats inmates within professional capabilities and according to Assessment (Treatment) Protocols- Treatment Guidelines and refers other health care problems to the appropriate health care provider.

Prepares for routine “Doctor’s Call” and assists the physician, as needed, with examinations, minor surgical procedures, etc. Implements physician’s orders to include obtaining lab specimens and scheduling outside appointments as needed.

Maintains a complete medical record on each inmate and documents in the medical record utilizing the SOAP format.

Maintains confidentiality of medical records as well as any other information gathered through the performance of their duties. This relates to information gathered regarding the facility operations, staff members as well as inmates.

If assigned, makes rounds in the medical observation area of special housing a minimum of once per shift and documents appropriately in each inmate’s record.

Conducts chronic clinic care and documents symptoms, assessments to include vital signs and reaction to treatment or progress of inmates on a periodic basis. Charts and reports problems to supervisor

Monitors for behavioral and mental status changes and makes appropriate referrals for follow-up.

Ensures that medications that are prescribed are administered as ordered. Under the guidance of the nursing staff and following appropriate training applies knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in dispensing medication. Maintains security while dispensing medications and is continually cognizant of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among inmates.

Works cooperatively with detention staff to insure that provision of health care does not jeopardize security and that application of security does not jeopardize appropriate health care. When possible, attends staff briefings with detention staff.

Maintains accountability of and properly disposes of all needles/syringes and other sharps.

Maintains accountability of pharmaceuticals.Maintains statistical information pertaining to Medical Section operation and prepares regularly scheduled reports and special reports as necessary.
