Inmate Expenses

Inmates at PCRJ are afforded the opportunity to purchase items from the Commissary (retail store). The Commissary carries personal hygiene items, stationery products and snack food items. Inmates are allowed to purchase these items from one to three times per week depending on their classification status. The cost is deducted from their account at the time of purchase. Inmates that are without funds are given basic hygiene items and letter writing supplies once per week upon request.

NOTE: The profits from the Commissary operation are used exclusively for the benefit of the inmate population. These funds are deposited in the Inmate Welfare Fund, which is used to procure recreational equipment (basketballs, volleyballs), games, cable TV service, educational material and library supplies, to mention a few.

Inmates may also use their funds to pay for telephone services. Inmates can request to have funds from their account deposited with the telephone company or have funds debited from their inmate account so they can make calls to specific family members or friends.

NOTE: The facility receives a commission on all inmate calls. These funds are also used exclusively for the benefit of the inmate population. In addition to supporting inmate recreational activities and programs directly benefiting inmates, these funds are used to pay inmates for work performed when assigned to selected jobs while at PCRJ.

Inmates at PCRJ are afforded the opportunity to request medical care while incarcerated. This care is provided upon request and regardless if an inmate has funds in his/her account or not. If the inmate does have funds in their account or upon deposit of funds they are charged a co-pay to help defray the high cost of health care. The cost is normally $10.00 per visit, may be more depending upon the services required, and $5.00 for each prescription processed. The medical co-payment program is in accordance with the Code of Virginia section numbered 53.1-133.1.

Inmates are charged a daily fee of $1.00 to help defray the cost of incarceration. The funds are used to support operating costs associated with running PCRJ. The funds are deducted from the inmate's account daily, or as funds are deposited into the inmate's account. The cost defrayment program is in accordance with the Code of Virginia section numbered 53.1-131.3.
